Week 3 reflection

I have always had an idea of what documentation was, but now I have learned the different ways we can do this and the benefits to this as well as why we do it. Documentation to me is a creative way to show a student's progress and learning. Artifacts that can be included are observation notes, videos of students playing, and/or students' work. There are a few ways we can do these: taking notes, taking pictures, and/or videos. Documentation is utilized for many reasons, but a few are, revisiting what a child learns, communicating with families, and advocating for appropriate development. I would use mainly individual portfolios and even portfolio panels as a way for students to show off their work, track their progress, and communicate with their families. There are two types of documentation we learned about, which include, Conventional and Reggio Emilia/project style documentation. The conventional style is more individualized. For example, students would each have their own portfolio that measures their progress/ learning and a form of summative assessment. Reggio Amelia/ project approach is more of a group effort where students collaboratively work on what they want to know which results in a formative type assessment. For example, the students show interest in something and then from there will work to figure it out through hands-on activities. The teacher in this situation works as the guide. These two types can still be documented in portfolio panels. Overall, this information will help me better show parents specific things that the students learn in parent-teacher conferences. I will even have this displayed in my classroom of their work so that outsiders or administrators see what we are working on.

  1. It seems you have learned a lot! I agree with keeping the work displayed for others to see the progress and things the students are working on!

  2. Hi Taylor, I loved reading your blog post! I liked how you mentioned showing parents their child's work at parent-teacher conferences. I also mentioned in my blog how important it is for families to see children's work. This helps parents become aware of what their child is currently learning about in the classroom. I think that Class Dojo would be a great way to communicate with families in the future and get them involved in the learning process.

Week 1 Reflection

In the first week of class, we learned all about assessment and the many ways we can assess students. When defining assessment in my own words, it is a way for teachers to observe, track, and gather students' progress and learning in many different formats and then be able to use that information when teaching/planning. There are two types of assessment, formal and informal assessment. We spent time in class explaining these. Formal assessments are more like quizzes, exams, and standardized assessments. Informal assessments are more laid back and focused on the student. These can be anecdotal records, portfolios, and/or self-assessments.  As a future teacher, I want to incorporate both types of assessments but focus more on informal so I can focus on the individual child's needs. I would use a diagnostic assessment before beginning a unit or lesson because it would show me what the child already knows before I teach a certain topic. When I say this, I mean that if I see that...

Week 7 and 8 reflection

This week's learning was kind of confusing for me, but as we talked more about it I understood it more. We spent these weeks talking about concepts in measurement and how that all relates to us as teachers when it comes to assessing our students. We focused on more of the statistical concepts. We looked at a score report and just the different elements that go into that then we got into the basic terms of population, sample, and norming. These are all terms that go with standardized assessments. The population is the whole group that would be tested for typical performance using an instrument so this would be all 7 year old taking a test. Then, a sample would be a portion of that population so the people that are included in the testing/ study. Norming is the typical performance of a group on the achievement of something. We also learned the difference between norm-referenced tests and criterion tests. Norm-referenced is just a bend compared to what the “norm” is of that age or gro...
